Today was the surgery but unfortunetly my body hates me more then I thought and so they couldn't put the portal in.
I got to the hospitol at noon and they took me in to start the pre-surgery stuff. Of course as soon as I walked into the room I felt nausaus and had to run to the bathroom where I promptly threw up basically nothing since I hadn't had anything to eat or drink in over 12 hours. Once the nurse was confident I was okay we started to get ready. I got into a big purple baggy hospitol robe thing. They explained once again what was going to go on and asked a few more questions and took my blood pressure and temperature.
Here was where the problem occured. The thermometer they stuck in my ear said my temperature was 101.3 and the one they stuck under my tongue said my temp was 103. So immediately they became concerned about performing surgery. The nurses started to rush around trying to find the surgeon to see what to do. During this time the they guy in charge of knocked me out came by and had me sign a release but said he wasn't sure what was going to happen since I had a fever.
Finally Dr. Peterson (the surgeon) came out and explained that it might not be a good idea to put the port in until they knew whether the fever was caused my the tumors or by something else. So he called Dr. Peacock to see what they should do. THey discussed it for a few minutes until finally deciding to do the biopsy but to wait and do the portal in a few weeks to see if treatment brings down the fever.
So once that was decided the nurses came back in. One came up with a bin of blood samples. They were going to take blood. I started to shake and cry and told the main nurse that I was terrified of needles. So she sent the girl away and said she could do it when the IV was in and I wouldn't even feel it. It was amazing and I was so extremely grateful there are just no words to describe it.
They then set to work putting in the IV. I have determined that they are scary but not as bad as normal needles. Sure enough the stuff in the IV numbed my arm and I never even felt them take the blood. And they promised me that no more needles were going to be used today. Everything was going to go through the IV. It was at this point they allowed my family to come back and wait with me, which I was very grateful for.
They stayed with me until 3PM when they finally came to take me to surgery. I was rolled into the room and covered in blankets and the rest of the items were plugged into the IV. I remember nothing after that.
I woke up and had a slight pain in my arm pit and was really groggy. Dr. Peterson came over and explained he had gotten two lymph nodes out to biopsy and that he was going to try and rush the results. I don't remember much else he said. I was then rolled back into my original room and my family was allowed back. I was finally given something to drink and a pain pill to take. THat was the best tasting Pepsi ever because I was so extremely thirsty.
I was still pretty out of it but the pain slowly went away out of my arm. THe nurse came up to see if I could pee. So I had to get up and go to the bathroom. Once I went pee apparently I was allowed to go home. Needless to say, I was able to pee. So I got dressed and my wheelchair chariot took me down to the lobby where my father already had the car pulled up ready to take me home.
So my first treatment of chemo will be taken through the arm. Apparently a few treatments through the veins won't do much damage so its safe. And then they can try and put the portal in again if my fever is down. Treatments should start next week once the results of the biopsy come back and they know which one to do.
